How to Test a Product Designer’s Task

From the perspective of a designed user flow – e.g., a page where a customer performs an action and gets a reward in the app.

Step 1 – Understand the Purpose of the Page

Before testing, ask:

  1. What is the goal of this page? (e.g., customer completes a list of actions → receives a reward)
  2. What is the exact journey the user should take? (check design flow or user journey map)
  3. What are the success conditions? (what must be true for the reward to be granted?)
  4. What feedback should the user receive at each step? (e.g., progress bar, confirmation pop-up)
  5. 📍 Tip: Always refer to the design file (Figma) and the task description in Jira/tracker before starting.

Step 2 – Recreate the User Journey

Follow the steps exactly as a customer would:

  1. Start from Entry Point: This could be a button, link, or notification that leads to the page. Confirm that entry matches design expectations.
  2. Perform the Required Actions. Complete the tasks exactly as a user would (e.g., “Upload a document,” “Invite a friend”). Note whether instructions are clear, buttons are visible, and states change appropriately.
  3. Review text, images and placement on the design.

Step 3 – Visual & Functional Alignment

  1. Visual Check: Layout, spacing, and brand elements match the Figma file.
  2. Functional Check: Buttons, links, and transitions as displayed on the intended screens for the intended action.
  3. Feedback States: Error, success, and loading states appear when expected.

Step 4 – Usability Review questions to ask yourself:

  1. Is it obvious what the user needs to do next?
  2. Are there unnecessary clicks or confusing elements?
  3. Would a first-time user understand the reward process without external help?

Step 5 – Log & Report Issues

We track all issues in the Issue Log, whether they are:

  1. From the current sprint task,
  2. Random testing, or
  3. Client feedback.
  4. For each issue, note:
    1. Task/Page Name
    2. Description of issue
    3. Expected vs. Actual Result
    4. Screenshots or recordings for clarity.

If it’s from the current sprint:

  1. Set status to Kickback in Jira/tracker.
  2. Add your comment with the issue.
  3. Notify the designer in the group chat.
  4. If you’re satisfied but want PM confirmation → mark as Final Review.

✅ Key Rule:
You’re not just checking if it looks right. You’re validating if the page helps the customer complete the intended journey successfully and without confusion.
